The Slow Down of Winter in Our Times

Amy Carter Ishmael / Comment on this

Every season has it's mileposts along the months.  Winter is no different.  As soon as Winter arrives it finds us busy to celebrate holidays, and then a new year.  For my house we extend thoses celebrations right through Jan. into Feb for Valentine's Day.  There were some years like this year, ations have stayed up.

However, this year, I feel the world slowing down a bit in Texas after New Year's and Valentines.  A time when generally people are gearing up for Spring, and making the beds ready in the garden, while also deciding what to give up for Lent, (A concept I hadn't heard of until coming to Texas and hearing my hubby tell me about it).  Then of course last year I found out what Mardis Grais meant and that took the whole idea to a different level.  (I've never been to LA during Mardi Grais yet it seems they decide to create something to give up during it from what I've heard.

What's different this year?  Besides some still "on wait lists" and counting down the days, while staying inside, sheltering in place, we also have those who have seen a true winter weather event that hasn't been seen in years.  That's like when I discovered, I'm a fair weather En Plein Air Painter.  I actually can feel heat and cold.

What?  Don't I realize that this event affords me the chance to get out and paint a winter scene with actual snowfall?

Why yes!  I do.  I stepped outside and took a few pictures.  I even plan on taking a little trip today, all bundled up to the point of only being able to click and shoot some photo references.  Now....I am joking to a degree or two or ten.

My thought though is that if it's cold enough for Uber Eats to shut down, and the trains to shut down, and my sister-in-law to have had to send her hubby to collect his daughter to save from a 40 degree apartment due to lack of electricity and a not steller insulation package, and to be bringing her to the safe house that hasn't had electricity since Sunday morning, has used all their firewood, and have been scavenging in the woods for extra dry timber to use....well (at least Thank God they have a generator which is more than I have).  Where was I?  Ah, yes, the joys of going outside in 9-18 degree temps....

I'm cleaning out my studio, so I have more room to paint in there today.
