This May was a whirlwind of work and rest and preparations for my first trip to the furthest Northeast I had ever been.
I left at Noon on my last day for the year at a school I had taught history at, and rented a car and hit the road of freedom. Gas prices not withstanding, I stayed mostly on budget by prepaying my lodging and budgeting well. Driving past many of the Civil War Battlefields or areas that I had tried my best to explain to the children.
I even, thought of them memorizing the quotes Lincoln made as I past by Gettysburg exit on Memorial Day, with remembering that Lincoln had made it a memorial to our country so that we would never take up arms against each other again. We would do well to remember his message that day.
I splurged a bit on a couple of hotels, being both a foodie and an artist, I needed to once rest when I was road weary and once when I had simply enjoyed a most delicious meal and wanted that to be my last memory of the road.
The days sort of merged or melded together as more and more scenery of beauty past before my eyes for the first time. I made good use of our byways. Ever thankful that highways are also there, I feasted my eyes on beauty along some documented mountain byways.
Enough beauty to paint all Summer Long and cherish the paintings I did complete or begin during late Spring...and over these next days as Spring turns to Summer.
Next year I will again travel North and will visit some of those places with my Son. He will love it, and I will try my best to show him the scenes in paintings in the meantime.
