An Artist's Day's Work
This week, we in Texas, well North Texas, at least experienced a bit of Winter Magic. We had not record low temps yet low enough for excitement to fill the air.
As a painter, I had not created many winter magical scene because I usually don't travel in Winter these days and Texas offered few vistas for me to capture snow on the ground and on "things".
Well it was only two days so far that I painted from my home, after excitedly removing the covering from what happens to be the largest window in my home, much to the chagrin of other inhabitants.
Well, it uncovered views in multiple directions and I played with materials that day and painted, drew, experimented, played some more, and ended the day with five small studies.
The next day I was super excited to paint even MORE snow....yet...we didn't get that second day of accumulation as I had hoped. Not too disappointed at that though, so I painted one larger than all the others study/painting. Not quite a polished painting mind you but more than a little study and learning went into that one. Lots of perspective study, and waiting for my composition to further develop. Dripping paint and magically seeing it supply a point of reference for my work on the building, which has not been my forte, yet I'm not shy about learning.
Then I switched media to my good ole oil paints! My comfort in oils and pastels are the highest. Yet...I was inspired only by the white ath that seemed to be leading out the gate. Out of the neighborhood. There's a feeling of snow that has one belong at home, and a feeling of the snow melting that turns my attention toward seeing how it looks on other objects. Especially after six paintings and the structure for the seventh.
So today, the gallery had decided to be closed, and my work day has turned into a full visit with unhurried expectations with my son at college. And guess what? I get to drive through lots of places along the way with my camera! Gathering even more snow reference photos for things like, storefronts or barns, haystacks, different types of tree gatherings, farm equipment. Now for y area the snow might be melted off most areas, except those somewhat sheltered from the sun that is shining right now.
However...we are driving an hour. Who knows what type of snow fell when an isolated little snow cloud was practicing it's new skill at dumping it's beautiful snow bounty where children awaited with lighted eyes to build a snowman in Texas!
I'll have my camera ready to capture a picture of a snowman somewhere if I get lucky enough to see one. Until then enjoy my little studies from Feb. 3rd. Available on-line for another few days only. Then let a studio painting begin!
